Before You Arrive
Road & seasons

Part of the magic of the Smokies is that the mountains feel a little different every season. The drive up is easy year-round, but it's always worth a quick weather and road check before you head out — especially in winter or after a big storm.

Check live road conditions

Tennessee keeps a free, statewide system of live cameras, traffic, and road-condition reports. If a winter storm is in the forecast, this is the place to look before you set off.

On the road in Tennessee, you can also just dial 511 from any phone for current conditions — hands-free, no app needed.

The seasons up here

  • Spring (March–May): Wildflowers everywhere, rushing waterfalls, and bright green regrowth. Days warm up nicely but mornings stay crisp — and spring is the rainiest stretch, so pack a rain shell.
  • Summer (June–August): Lush, green, and lively. Warm, humid days, cooler evenings on the deck, and the occasional afternoon thunderstorm that rolls through and clears just as fast.
  • Fall (September–November): The headliner. The leaves turn in waves and October is simply spectacular — it's also the busiest time, so book early and expect more traffic in town.
  • Winter (December–February): Quiet, crisp, and beautiful, with long-range views through the bare trees. Snow and ice are occasional rather than constant, but they do happen up here.
Winter heads-up: the final road down to the cabin sits in the shade, so ice can linger there long after it's melted elsewhere. If snow or ice is in the forecast, check conditions first and read our Parking tips — and if you're ever unsure heading up, just give us a call.
For the current temperature and a 6-day forecast for the cabin's exact area, see Local weather — it updates live.
