Things to do

The Smokies are a true “choose your own adventure.” On a single stretch of road you can find a mountain coaster, a craft gallery, and a quiet waterfall trail. Whether you're chasing thrills or chasing mist, the variety can be dizzying — so here's our shortlist of the legendary, do-it-once heavy hitters to anchor your trip.

Want something close and calmer? Greenbrier (Porters Creek) and the Roaring Fork Motor Trail are both about 25–30 minutes away and give you the real Smokies without the crowds of the main drag.

The heavy hitters

  • Great Smoky Mountains National Park — the crown jewel and the reason we're all here. Scenic drives, waterfalls, Cades Cove. Start on our park page.
  • Dollywood (Pigeon Forge) — world-class coasters, live music, craftspeople, and that cinnamon bread. More here.
  • Anakeesta (Gatlinburg) — a chondola up to a mountaintop park with canopy walks, gardens, and some of the best sunset views around.
  • Ripley's Aquarium of the Smokies (Gatlinburg) — regularly voted the country's best aquarium; the underwater shark tunnel is a hit with kids.
  • The Island (Pigeon Forge) — shopping and entertainment around the dancing fountains and the 200-ft Great Smoky Mountain Wheel.
  • Alcatraz East Crime Museum (Pigeon Forge) — a surprisingly engaging, high-tech dive into American crime and forensics.
  • Dolly Parton's Stampede (Pigeon Forge) — the gold-standard dinner show: horses, trick riding, and a four-course meal you eat with your hands.
  • The Village Shops (Gatlinburg) — a quaint, European-style cluster of unique shops and eateries just off the Parkway.
There's far more — mountain coasters, moonshine and wine trails, ziplines, mini-golf, ghost tours, the SkyBridge — than any one trip can hold. See Pigeon Forge & Gatlinburg for the lay of the land.
